CALVIN GETS THE LAST WORD

And my review is brought to you courtesy of being out of town and relying on picture book ebooks for a few days. Margo Sorensen's 2020 book Calvin Gets the Last Word, illustrated by Mike Deas, is maybe the only picture book written from the perspective of a dictionary? The dimensions of the family dynamic, nerdiness, school chaos, friends, and sibling rivalry are layered so well through the lens of Calvin pushing the boundaries of language. Complemented by Mike Deas' very adorable Calvin-and-Hobbes-style comic illustrations, it's easy to see this picture book being the entry point for a lot of different types of conversations between kids and their grownups. Last thing to note - how in the heck has it been six years since 2020? Wow.
