Josh is finally getting around to reviewing Jerrold Connor's JIM!, his biography of James Marshall. Jerrold proves with this book that he's close enough to his subject that he can very skillfully render this creator into an abstraction that at once elicits Marshall, proves Jerrold is a capable storyteller, and bucks what we think of as the standard must-have picture book story structure. As with Josh's other recent review KAKFA AND THE DOLL, it doesn't need to or seek to be any kind of comprehensive overview of Marshall's life, but it evokes him in a way that honors him and keeps him alive and vibrant.
