THE FABULOUS FANNIE FARMER

Who ever thought standardizing measurements could make for a compelling picture book story? Josh's review is for The Fabulous Fannie Farmer, by Emma Bland Smith and illustrated by Susan Regan. This book explores Fannie Farmer, whose 19th century experiences in finding meaning in her life led her to dedicate herself not only to bringing some rigor to recipe writing, but also to empowering the women whose lives at the time were spent in the kitchen, puzzling over what "enough yolks as may be necessary" really meant when they wanted to bake a cake. Fannie is a great unsung hero figure subject for a picture book, as someone whose dedication and passion had a lasting impact on her field, and her story is super well told and relatable. And makes total sense for our Thanksgiving-adjacent episode.
