And for me, WANDA HEARS THE STARS by Amy S Hansen and the subject herself Wanda Diaz Merced, illustrated by Rocio Arreola Mendoza, does a lot of work as a picture book biography, presenting the fullness of Wanda Merced's life as a native Puerto Rican, a woman with diabetes who suffers blindness as a consequence of her disease, and as an astronomer having to grapple with the reality that she can no longer see stars. It's an encouraging book about resilience and creativity and brings us a lot closer to understanding what it means to live a full and complete life not defined by one thing you did, but because you have stayed true to who you are and adapted to life's challenges as they come.
